Did you know that most women are in the wrong size sports bra?
If you follow me on Insta, you've probably noticed a bunch of bras in my recent posts. They deserve to be talked about. You deserve to find a sports bra you love that loves you back. If you're not comfortable in your fitness attire or always have to re-adjust your straps or band mid-workout, you can be sacrificing yourself from having a great workout. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to put a toll on my fitness. Let's minimize distractions and take care of our girls. Here are some HERfitness quick tips when looking for your perfect sports bra:
Focus on fit.
Many sports bras go by band and cup size - as they should for a precise fit! Visit your local sports apparel store and ask if they do bra fittings (pssst: Nike stores offer 1:1 bra fittings you could book through the new Nike+ app. Fun fact: I used to work at the Nike Chicago store and was a trained Bra Fit Specialist!). The experts can guide you on the type of material and style you should choose from. Getting the right size fit might take an extra step in the moment, but it can definitely save you money in the long run. Plus, your body is always changing so it's good to adjust!
Test it out.
When you try your sports bras on, do some bodyweight exercises that you regularly would do in your fitness classes or on your own. Go ahead, get into some lunges and jumping jacks in that fitting room! Ensure that your sports bra reduces breast motion not only vertically, but also from side to side. We don't need spillage or loose bands girls!
Compression vs. encapsulation. There are two types of designs for bras. Compression sports bras are most suitable for ladies with smaller chest because you need less support. These types of bras are also best for low impact activities. Encapsulation designs have molded cups - which are great for high-intensity workouts and ladies with larger chests. Try different types of styles and see which you like best!
Make it pretty.
Function & comfort first, but sports bras don't have to be boring. Many retailers are coming out with cuter designs that also give you the support you need. Browse around before making a final decision. Find your favorite colors. Get the one with the crazy straps that you can wear under a fitness crop top or loose tank. Mesh? Yes! Customize as you see fit. I always remind myself: if you look good, you feel good, you have a great workout. Heck, sports bra shopping is almost like shoe shopping...
Take care, girl.
Wash your sports bras in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid fabric softener and bleach. Use a wash bag if you have one. Dry them flat or hang dry them. For the dryer, use the cold tumble cycle only: Heat breaks down spandex. Replace the bra if the ends of the spandex fibers start showing or the fabric no longer snaps back into shape. Buy a new one annually (or more if you wear frequently!).
HERfitness fave: My favorite sports bra is the Nike Pro Indy Cool - it's a light support style that's great for low-impact workouts!
